You are going create a Flashy Square Effect effect, you can use this effect to make a wallpaper like this.

Okay, Using any size document, add Gradient color with gradient tool, my own use blue color.
Create new layer and give name “square”.
Create random square with pen tool and make selection with the square (right click > make selection > feather 0px).
Fill it with paint bucket tool and make the layer overlay mode.
Repeat those step and use another color
Use filter:
Pixelate > mosaic
Cell Size : 5
Brush strokes > accented edges
Edge Width :5
Edge Brightness :30
Smoothness : 8
Artistic > poster edges
Edge Thickness : 2
Edge Intensity : 1
Posteriztion : 1
Change the opacity, my own use 60%.
You can use Flashy Square Effect to make a wallpaper.

You know, this is a good START for a banner, really good for making a pattern and changing opacity in a checker pattern.
for the use you have it for, if you extrude it would help… just make the faces big

everytime i try to paint the first layer of squares, the squares dnt get painted, only a section of the background does. how do i solve this?
